URJA's Women’s Health Camp Empowers Rural Assam: A Step Towards Better Healthcare Access
On 11 February 2026, URJA, in partnership with Ajanta Pharma and supported by Apollo Hospitals, organized a landmark Mega Women’s Health Camp at Hatidova LP School, Bagan, Guwahati, Assam. This initiative was part of URJA’s flagship programme, Sanjeevani, aimed at bridging the healthcare gap in remote areas of Assam by bringing essential medical services directly to women in underserved villages.
Addressing Healthcare Challenges in Rural Assam

Access to quality healthcare remains a significant challenge for many women living in the interiors of Assam. Recognizing this, URJA’s health camp was designed to provide comprehensive preventive health check-ups and consultations to women who otherwise have limited or no access to medical facilities. The camp offered a range of health screenings including Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement, blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar tests, and Electrocardiograms (ECG) where necessary.
Comprehensive Eye Care Services for Women in Assam

A dedicated medical team from Apollo Hospitals conducted detailed eye examinations as part of the camp’s services. Among the 70 women beneficiaries, 15 elderly women were identified with vision impairments and were provided with spectacles free of cost, significantly improving their quality of life. The camp also highlighted prevalent health issues such as anemia and chronic knee pain, underscoring the need for ongoing nutrition and bone health interventions in future outreach efforts.
Promoting Menstrual Hygiene Awareness and Reproductive Health Education
Beyond medical screenings, the camp emphasized education on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health. Women attending the camp participated in awareness sessions focused on safe menstrual practices, an essential but often overlooked aspect of women’s health in rural communities. To support this, 1,000 sanitary napkin packets were distributed, helping to promote hygiene and dignity among the participants.
" The health facility has been quite good for us, especially the sanitary napkins which we found are much safer and hygienic than cloths."
Support from Local Administration and Community Leaders

The event was graced by the presence of the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup District and his administrative team, who lauded the initiative for its impactful outreach and commitment to improving rural healthcare. Their support reinforces the importance of collaborative efforts between NGOs, healthcare providers, and government bodies in addressing public health challenges.
Impact and Future Directions for Women’s Health in Assam

The Mega Women’s Health Camp marks a significant milestone in URJA’s ongoing mission to expand healthcare access and awareness for women in Assam’s remote regions. By combining medical services with education and community engagement, URJA and its partners are paving the way for healthier, empowered women and stronger rural communities.
